Girls flag football is sweeping the nation. It was even adopted as an official sport for the 2028 Olympics!
A number of KM students have been waiting for just this moment to compete in this great American pastime.
A group of girls at KMHS have been trying to start a football team for several years now. Participating in the annual homecoming powderpuff game, while fun, also felt a bit unfulfilling. Watching the boys play under the lights at Vock on Fridays, and only getting that one shot to play the sport they love was frustrating... until now. This year, they formed a league of their own with Coach Mac, a former flag football coach and current head football coach, stepping into the lead role. And unlike the baseball movie, this team is loaded with talent. Most of the girls on the team play other sports, and their skills in other areas have translated well to football. The quarterback, Casey Navarro, is an exceptional catcher with an arm like a cannon. Grace Walczak, a defender in soccer, brings the ability to read defenses, predict, prevent, and intercept. As a rugby player, Riley Vertz dominates at running back, and Keegan Lodes brings the speed of a track and field superstar. They are supported by a cast of talented, athletic, young ladies who have dominated the league thus far. They remain undefeated, with the highest point differential in the league 41-12 Mukwonago 46-12 MKE Washington 52-34 Greenfield 57-24 Waukesha West, and 30-26 Muskego Red. All games are held Sunday evenings in the indoor facility at Muskego High School. The team has generated a lot of social media interest and fan support among the KM Community and beyond. The hope is to expand the program to the Classic 8, and ultimately to create a new WIAA sport with broad participation throughout the state.
